Many people who have had COVID-19 experience ongoing symptoms which often include shortness of breath, fatigue, poor endurance, “brain fog”, sleep disorders, fever, gastrointestinal issues, anxiety and depression. Such patients have been referred to as Long Haulers and Long COVID and the collective effects have been referred to as Post-Acute Sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection (PASC). The American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation recently launched a campaign advocating for a comprehensive national plan focused on the needs of those individuals suffering from the long-term symptoms of COVID-19: see plan details
Physiatrists are uniquely qualified to help guide the multidisciplinary effort needed to develop a plan for this crisis and are indispensable leaders to direct the rehabilitation and recovery of those suffering from Long COVID. Physiatrists such as Dr. Cooperman are already leading the way in this effort as recently reported in The Atlantic: Brain-Fog Treatments: COVID-19 Research Is Getting Better
